The City of San Buenaventura (Ventura for short) was incorporated in 1866. It adopted its shorter nickname shortly after in 1891. It is located in Ventura County, California and is currently county seat for the area. Ventura hosts an estimated population of 109,946 and can be reached using the State Routes 33 and 126, and well as the U.S. Route 101.
Some of the best surfing in Southern California can be found at Surfer’s Point in Ventura County Fairgrounds. It is extremely popular and well used due to the temperate climate in the area. Shopping, fine dining, and museums are plentiful downtown. Ventura is also the home of the Mission San Buenaventura. The busiest areas of the city are probably California Street and Main Street, which lie between Ventura Avenue and Fir Street. The former home of the Ortega family (famous for their Chile products), Ortega Adobe, is located downtown as well. The shopping opportunities are vast and range from thrift shops to high-end retail. The city hall building is lovingly detailed and is the home to a beautiful statue of Junipero Serra. Wine bars and restaurants litter the streets downtown and the Rubicon Theatre Company, which has been internationally recognized, is also situated here.
The fishing industry runs strong in Ventura Harbour, which hosts a variety of seafood restaurants as well as a small shopping village. Several famous shops and restaurants have located here, such as The Glass Touch, Milan’s. and World Famous Hicees BBQ. The Ventura Harbour, which is home to The Channel Islands National Park Headquarters, offers trips to the Channel Islands daily.
